Also the fish in the photo is bleeding from the gills. If the gills were damaged it is most likely a goner even if it swam away. I've also seen some photos of other muskies in recently posted reports held vertically from their gill plates. A fish that large and heavy should always be supported from the belly and held horizontally to protect the internal organs.

Nice fish!! Everyone becomes an expert on proper fish catch and release pictures.. Makes me laugh that everyone knows the best way to handle a fish but unless u "waterski" the fish in with over sized no fun fishing equipment , u really cant control what the fish does in the water... Just" congrats"the guy on his catch and leave your expert tactics know all comments to yourselves... My 2 cents.....

Didn't you know? Everyone on the internet is an expert/doctor. I'm sure we all saw the blood, sh!t happens. Nobody here can say they have never had a fish take a hook or lure to deep.

Im sure this fish was fine, especially with the cold water. Ive had fish that are bleeding from the mouth and is running out the gills when i pick them up.

Yes, the blood running down the side was from the mouth - nothing whatsoever wrong with the gills.

I get why people want to give their two cents on handling and releases. So many lurkers/noobs see these pictures with no context or experience, so education is important.

I try not take anything personally...

Well done, a tank for sure, ive had many over the years swim away in the same shape, even some who are bleeding near the gills, not from hooks, but im guessing from the ferocious 40 second fight, on muskie gear and incidentals on walleye gear, sounds like you did everything right, im sure you felt good watching it swim away, cheers
