Was in Peterborough for a meeting yesterday and decided to check ice on a lake a bit further north. Found 4-6" of good solid black ice everywhere I went (and out to the the centre of the lake where I was). Didn't bring an auger so had to spud out holes (could only make two as it was a bit of work). Had 7 large mouth bass on (losing 3 at the hole due to the small tear-drop jigs I was using), two crappies and 4 or 5 sunfish. All bass released but then on my way home, I realized, they were still in season! (until Dec. 15) and I could have kept the ones I landed. Releasing bass during ice fishing is so automatic. Crazy that we have ice now. Last year my first ice fishing trip was Dec. 28 (and I thought it was great to fish before the new year) - about the same amount of ice too.
Hope all lasts after the next few warmer days coming up.
