Can someone help me with what this is. The deer is hanging by it's hind quarters and the lump is just under the tail in the center of the back. It seems to be in the fat only. The deer is a large mature buck I shot yesterday.
Yes I am new to posting here. I have put in a call to the mnrf and waiting for someone to call me back.
I would like to get the meat tested for any diseases but don.t know where. I am near Uxbridge Ontario.

I’d say it’s probably some sort of cyst or tumor? I would think the meat is probably fine.. I’d just cut around it. I’m no scientist either though so make your own decision, I’m curious what they’ll say.

Could be scar tissue from a previous injury? I would have him tested for CWD before consuming any meat. Call the MNRF and they will give you a contact number.

Hello
I contacted Animal Health Lab at the University of Guelph and I am bringing the head and the lump with plenty of normal tissue for analysis tomorrow. We will see what they say. Fingers crossed that the meat is good. Tags and more importantly deer are very hard to come by in my area.
Deer meat is our stable red meat we consume every year.

from my years as a provincial meat inspector it looks to me as an abcess has formed from some sort of injury. the body will form a pocket around an injury to reduce spreading and will heal it self if possible. with that amount of kernel fat forming around it, in my opinion the body is rejecting the injury or either absorbing the inflammation to its best ability. and it would be good within the next year or two. the deer immune system is not as strong as other wildlife. therefore it takes awhile to heal. i hope you get good news from the university and enjoy the great eats pickerel 24

That is similar what the guys at the university think as well. They are going to analysis it under a microscope etc. and also check for CWD from the head I brought in. They said in a week they will inform me. I like to age my meat anyways so I just hope it will remain cold all next week.

As I suspected from the pictures, the fat is just dead in the area (what we call fat necrosis). The underlying muscle looks perfect and I see no indication of an underlying infectious agent. So you’re probably wondering how this can happen. Unfortunately it’s hard to say in some cases. If this was happening in the internal fat and all over the body then you’d worry about whether this deer has some sort of nutritional deficiency or toxicity, but with it localized to one area, the best option is often trauma to the area. And there are other times when we really never get to the bottom of it.
My best guess in this case is that there was some sort of traumatic event to that area, which caused the fat to die a week or two before you shot the deer and you were seeing the clean up and healing changes.
As I mentioned, there is nothing that I can see to suggest there is any issue with the underlying meat and I see nothing to suggest a systemic problem so I don’t see anything to suggest you can’t safely consume the meat from this deer. Obviously if you are finding other changes in the meat then let me know, but if it all looks healthy to you then I’d have no concerns.
