I sat there at the edge of the lake this morning, wondering if anyone else would show up. The bays have been skimmed over for weeks on lake X near Bancroft. I could not take the anticipation of good ice any longer, so I headed out a few feet at a time. Before continuing, I must admit that I made some stupid mistakes this morning, I forgot my spud bar, float suit, skimmer scoop and good winter boots!?!
Anyways, I drilled the first hole about five feet off shore, 6", then again every few feet until i was out from shore about 30'. Consistently 6" of ice, so I dropped my transducer down and dropped in a line with a very small perch pattern jigging rap on it. I saw marks moving up and down in the beam, but no takers.
I didn't have the guts to move out further, being alone and without safety gear, i couldn't stomach it. However, i did get that overwhelming feeling of accomplishment for being out on the ice on Dec 8 for the first time in years, and knowing that next week i will get out to the crappie grounds now that I know the ice is pretty thick.
