I've had Sturgeon. A big one like that will taste like mud.

Pretty wild ! Rather Chew on a Wild Turkey's Leg then consuming a fish that big.

They said he just mounted it ?

What a waste to kill a fish of that size!

They are the ones that should be left to breed.

I stayed neutral and tried to restrain myself through spearing walleye below a damn. I understand the native rights, and try to remain neutral but this sickens me.

This fish is probably very old and full of toxins. I am quite certain it does not make good table fare. Although it's perfectly legal in this case..

Off the record.. not right - especially in this day and age - this story sounds like it comes right out of a newspaper in 1910.

I'd say only, that a Taxidermy will never see that fish as it would cost 4 to 5 g's for a replica mount. More than what 95% of the people make up there in a year on that reserve. Not including the Bingo of course.
It is sad to see that fish go but to look on the bright side, who knows what it has already added to the fishery in all it's years of being alive.
I know a couple guys who caught one around the same size ice fishing a few years ago and they kept the fish. There's a picture of it in the Huronia Bait Store.
No one ever spoke of that fish being poached of course.

DISGUSTING!!!!

Letter to the Editor

(Re: ‘Angler reels in bragging rights; Sturgeon tips scales at 159 pounds’ in the May 15 edition of the Examiner)

I was totally appalled by this article.

The gentleman referred to is in no way what any competent-thinking sportsman would call a fisherman. Writer Douglas Glynn goes on to say that “some fishing enthusiasts might envy him”, when the truth is that fishing enthusiasts despise this type of behaviour.

Spearing pickerel is illegal, and spearing pickerel in spawning season destroying mature fish and future generations all at once is disgusting.

Further, sturgeon is an endangered species in most of Southern Ontario. A six-foot, nine-inch sturgeon weighing 159 pounds is a 32-year-old fish.

I would strongly suggest that before irresponsible articles like this are written for public consumption that the writer do some research.

It is sad that our government allows this type of thing to take place, but for the local paper to promote and praise it is disgusting.

Great letter Minkota

I wonder if the treaty rights trump the endangered species act?

Edit: I just did a quick search, and found Lake Sturgeon are a threatened species in Ontario, not endangered. There is a commercial fishery for sturgeon, although it is heavily regulated.

also, I did a google search for "Do treaty rights beat endangered species act" and found a case in the US where a native was shooting bald eagles. He was charged, but what I see is the court "held that the Eagle Protection Act and Endangered Species Act did not abrogate this treaty right", citing religious freedoms.
