Yes really dark crappies. I caught some last week that weren't as dark but much bigger average size. Yesterday was a lot different. The crappie were smaller average and green. The walleye fishing was better tho. Trolling with a perch pattern c.c. Shad was the lure we were using.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that the black faced crappie are males. And they loose that colouring after spawning.

I thought the same thing. When I got home and cleaned them I found out they were females. Perhaps both sexes turn black. I hope to get more next week.

Great Looking fish. Havent been to Rice Lake in about two years. Anybody still fish the Otanbee river area.We used to get alot of walleye in there pulling heavy current on the sides and later go for them in there post spawn locations. Were you still getting the crappie shallow or deeper??

We were fishing in shallow water between 5 -7 ft. with some wood structure. perfect for snagging our jigs on. the crappie were definitely relating to that wood.
