Apparently not enough to support snowmobiles or atv's yet. I also heard it happened close to the causeway. There is current there, so the ice I'm sure was not very strong.

Was below the causeway and found 5-6 consistent inches of ice. Driving a snowmobile on the ice at night on early ice? Not too smart but happens every year.

Beyond those 5" is open water. I was at Chemong yesterday and could see below the causeway in the middle of the lake was open water, and its open water at the causeway tunnel. Theres also a massive pressure crack in the middle thats open water from east to west.
Near the shore is safe but to snowmobile the whole lake is not.

An expensive mistake. The reason he was on the lake is probably because there is no snow anywhere due to the warmer temps, which does not make for thicker ice. In case there was any doubt 4 inches doesn't support sleds or atv's.
