Cow moose?, WHY

I hunt on the regular.

I've been moose hunting, i've put the time and money into it.

I don't understand why they sell Calf and Cow tags still...

Is the moose population not hurting????

Calfs are whats next to hunt in a few years,

Cows are producers of the species.

You aren't missing anything, the fact that the moose population is hurting is of no concern to the mnrf. It is purely based on revenue for the government and nothing else. As a moose hunter also with no luck in some time I think the season should be closed for a few years. All the license fees, the lcbo revenue and all other spin off dollars add up to a lot and the gov't doesn't want to give it up

I think even if they ran it more like the deer hunt, no calf tags at all and keep the draw the draw a tag of either bull or moose

What I suggest is only have a hunt every second year. This gives the calf time to mature and produce. Then control the amount of tags from that. They will say to much revenue lost. I then would suggest that when the season is closed for that year, you would still have to buy a tag for that year in order to qualify for the year it is open. I mean if we can increase the population so more tags are allotted, would it not be worth the extra money we have to pay out.

maybe once they figure it all out, they could distribute tags fairly?!

I just did a rough survey between 12 different groups of hunters

Everyone in 15a 15b and 13 we’re only successful for cow tag only.
( 9 cow ) (13 bull) Pretty crazy to me.

Word in the bush was that next year there handing out more bull tags for the area.

Then again could be a number game in which they want more ppl to apply.

More and more moose hunting gangs are dropping the moose hunt due to the high number applied per adult tag. Also with no guarantees!

Will be the last moose hunt for me here . With all the time and money spent better of to hunt Newfoundland , Newbrunswick or northern Quebec.

The flip side to this, and folks will probably not agree, if you are against hunting a cow moose, it's simple, don't get that license whether its available or not. There are two sides to every coin.

I agree, the moose hunt should be closed to "everyone" for a few years. If the MNR does not want to shut down the hunt then stop selling the calf licences at least. That should help increase the population over time.

Same rules for everyone. Native harvest needs to be controlled. They kill whatever whenever.

Defantly putting a big dent into the moose population.

Will be the last for our gang hunting moose here. Doesn’t make sense the way things are going . Cheaper to hunt outside of Ontario and less rules .

sure think there be more down south, I seen more moose this season then ever, bulls were on another area, they had cow tags, we seen lots of cows, and no bulls we had that tag 53 area
...sure seeing a few moose in the Ramara / Seabright area
