Hey guys..I have a 96 90hp evinrude and I am in need of a new lower unit! While coming back from my fishing hole yesterday something happened and the lower unit sounds like garbage. I drained the oil and as expected little bitts of steel all over the place. Would I be able to rebuild the lower unit or should I just try to track down a used one? Either way I need to get back on the water fast! Help!!

You can rebuild it but it's a laborous procedure and a bit technical. First make sure the casing is not cracked. If it is you'll need to find another lower unit from a "parts" motor. Once you are sure there are no cracks, find a manual and figure out how to lower the unit, usually a few bolts about midway up the the lower end. These should drop the whole thing. Then you will have to open up the gear box area. A few more bolts. Careful opening the gear box you don't want all the parts flying out. Once you get the gear box open, take a few pictures of how the gears are placed in there, the go in a very specific order. Usual broken part is your shift dog. You might want to check if it is shifting before you do all this.. But if it is making noise and you found metal bits - it's probably shot.. Of course this was for an older model evinrude outboard I did this work for, yours might be different. Make sure you get a maintanence manual for your outboard and check the procedure for the lower unit rebuild.

Thanks for the tips admin. I would really like to find a used unit so I can bolt up and go. Once I get back on the water I would like to try to rebuild my unit and sell it to some poor bugger like me. Also I've got a pic of a MONSTER bass that was caught and released and a real nice pickerel.. But I'm still waiting for my apple products to work on here
Thanks again!

Posting a picture should work on your apple device. The only issue right now seems to be with flash media not pictures. When you post a message, below the message window you will see an area called "file attachments". Just click the browse button and upload your pic and add it to the post. That's it..

Or you can just email them to me and i'll post them for you info@lakesimcoeoutdoors.com

I made a few calls after work today and I found one for a grand I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place right now... I really need the part and I don't want to buy a new engine and sell mine for parts. I will keep hunting around but as things are right now I'm broke and without my boat
