Has anyone had success with dying rabbit calls for calling in coyotes in the winter? Is one type better than another? What method do you use?

I want to get out for coyotes this winter with my son and our .222 rifle and thin them out to hopefully help out the deer and rabbits.

I’m interested in your experiences or thoughts. Thanks in advance.

This is general ("not exact" = science):

I start with a howler call (let them know they're others are around). Wait 5 - 10 minutes.

Then a distress call. Cotton tail or jack rabbit. Wait 5 - 10 minutes.

Then a confidence call. Crow (even multiple calling).

Then howler calls (dinner is done).

30 - 45 min. setup.

"Get to callin'!"

Haven't been in a couple of years but loved the rabbit in distress call. Newburg has it figured out for sure.
Only a couple of pieces of advice to pass on.
Pay attention to the wind.
Bring bino's for scanning .
Don't over call, you don't want to give the yotes an education.

Good luck and straight shooting

I used a call made by cass creek over the Holliday’s. cottontail in distress call had two yotes coming in on the run within 20 seconds of turning it on. Dropped one with the 22-250 but the other turned on the afterburners and made it to cover. Great advice from the board members. Good hunting. 7r

I got out yesterday afternoon for a couple hours to enjoy the winter sun and call in a coyote.

I tried 3 different spots on my walk each one 700 or 800 meters apart. I only used the distress call because that’s all I have.

I tried each spot for 15-20 minutes and then moved on. I was careful with wind direction but no takers anyway.

It was a great day to get outside all the same and I will be trying again. It felt good to be walking and hunting again. I’ll keep everyone posted, hopefully with pics next time.

A friend of mine was out early this a.m. and called in two coyotes within 5 minutes. His partner decked the first one which accelerated the second one. Several shots sped it up even more an he said as far as he knows it still might be running.

He was using a mouth blown rabbit in distress call and rarely waits for more than 15 minutes before moving.

Now that’s stacking ‘em up. The deer and rabbits will sleep soundly in your area tonite.
