Throwing another variable in the mix of water shrinking and expanding...

When water is at 4 degrees Celsius, a temperature change ( increase or decrease) will cause the water to expand.

AHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!!!!!!!

now that is some hilarious stuff right there!!

I would trust the world of biology on this one pal.

You're simply just wrong.

Solids do not expand when they get COLDER - ICE DOES - that's why it doesn't behave like a solid does.

Following me there?

Solid = contracts in cold
Ice = expands in cold
----------------------------
Conclusion - ice does not behave like a solid would!!!

Clear enough?

Also you failed to address the other points that I made so I am done trying to convince you - have fun living in your tiny personal world of not believing in physics!!!

I'm not sure where the world of biology comes into play here.

You are confused, ice does not expand as it gets colder, water expands during its phase change from liquid phase (water) to solid state (ice).
This is probably the source of your confusing, everybody knows that water expands when it freezes, so some people think it keeps expanding while its getting colder, but this only happens during the phase change (and as somebody pointed out, also between the temperature of 4C and the point of freezing, but the vast majority of the expansion happens at the moment of freezing)
Once this phase change is complete, ice is now a solid and acts exactly as a solid.

I did address your points, i said you were completely wrong.

Please do read the article from the Minnesota DNR and comment on it.

Minnesota?

Well that's your problem right there! lol

Case closed sir!

In my defence I meant to say physicists not biologists LMAO was emailing my brother as well at the same time who is a biologist

derp.

But simply you're wrong

You can prove this by putting water into a water bottle or anything really - it isn't exploding out right away, it slowly expands the colder it gets, to a point - we've all witnessed it lol

All in all, I don't really care if you cite an article, then hide behind that, but have not done real research.

Ask anyone who has left a bong outside on the winter - it can freeze, but not break. Then later on once it keeps getting colder and freezing more and EXPANDING, then CRACK!! No more bong lol

But that must be because the ice is NOT expanding right?

This is laughable lol

Also that an article written by some random person in 1987 - hold no more merit than what you are saying now.

At this point I really don't care - it's just funny to see someone argue tooth and nail and cite ridiculous sources then sit back in their armchair like they've done something grand lol

Agree to disagree.

Tight lines!

I see what the problem is here, you blew up way too many bongs.

The person who wrote that specific presentation was the regional hydrologist at the MN DNR at the time. He would know a thing or 2 about water, and ice, and ice mechanical properties did not change much since 1987, and they are the same here now as they were in Minnesota back then.

And to help you out with your bong, it did not blow up right away not because the ice expanded as it got colder, but because the water in it did not all freeze at the same instant, it took some time for all the water to freeze. And as more of the water in it froze over time, the more ice there was.

Maybe consider laying off the bong for a bit, but it could be too late i guess.

My BROTHER the biologist is a hydro tech for the government CURRENTLY AS IN, this very second lol I think he might know a thing or two about water since that's his entire job and livelihood.

Give your head a shake man.

OK MY FREINDS LETS STOP ARGUING HERE PLEASE SORRY FOR DISTURBING YOU

ok first of all ICE EXPANDS in cold its a law of physics thats first
everyone knows that lets do some experiment here .
put water in the tube or hose and put it outside so water will turn into ice and tube will crack why becosue ice will expand eventually will break the hose so why we arguing here we all know is low of physics personally i do not know what Minnesota DMNR stating regarding that but very sorry again for interrupting you my freinds but we all know that so conclusion lets just wait and see when we can get enough ice in lady simcoe and we can fish for whities

Wow I thought this was about how existing ice reacts to tempature, and it was obvious as more water freezes the ice will expand. Me thinks people are having two different conversations.

No---water expands when it changes to ice. Ice, as a solid, behaves like all other solids---expands when the temp increases and vice versa. You can quote all the Hydro techs you like---it won't change the basic physics. As I said earlier_--Disco's link was explaining the formation of ice, not its behavior as a solid.

Some people aren't able to tell the difference between these 2 very different things.
