Next to no wind and happened in a second a little hairline crack came through and then it sunk down a bit and broke off
Wow man. Mother Nature can turn mean in a second. Glad it happened to an Ice Vet instead of a newbie. We would be reading about rescues instead of warnings.

Good to hear you guys all ok to see another day of fishing. Electronics, huts, and equipment can always be replaced, but not a life. There’s always a saying, NO ICE, IS SAFE ICE. Let’s all be careful, and live another day of fishing.

Holy crap.
Thanks for the warning. Is there open water (not the crack) but elsewhere, for it to have somehere to push? Must be open somewhere . We felt our house shake this morning. We're in Alcona. We suspected ice when it happened.
Last year on Cooks, out of the blue, it thundered and suddenly our 12-man solid structure shifted a foot beneath us. Didn't open, but by the time we came in at dusk, the shoreline had a three-foot high ice wall.

Thankfully you guys are ok.
There is no open water anymore. The ice is likely pushing up on shore somewhere.

Holly macaroni......would be throwing out my underwear out if that happened to me. So happy to hear you are ok Yamaha......close call......I was on the North edge of couch last week and it was dead quiet and all of a sudden the loudest traveling ice thundering sound I ever heard went through.......I jumped out of the hut expecting some kind of separation but saw none.....I was about 100 feet from the pressure crack....looked at it but did not feel like crossing it. Ice was 5 black and one inch of white......it happens fast and does not care if your feet are in the way.......be safe everyone and thank you for the report warning everyone Yamaha.....you just made everyone a little more questioning and cautious of their ice experience......thank you.
