Holy crap.
Thanks for the warning. Is there open water (not the crack) but elsewhere, for it to have somehere to push? Must be open somewhere . We felt our house shake this morning. We're in Alcona. We suspected ice when it happened.
Last year on Cooks, out of the blue, it thundered and suddenly our 12-man solid structure shifted a foot beneath us. Didn't open, but by the time we came in at dusk, the shoreline had a three-foot high ice wall.
Thankfully you guys are ok.
No it likely pushed up on shore somewhere, I was on some of the best ice I’ve pribably ever been on. Solid clear ice

Excellent post! I'm glad no one went for a dip. People need to know that these things happen. Always prepare for the worst. Be safe safe out there folks because it could easily happen to you.

Wow, glad to hear everyone is ok and safe. Anything can happen with out notice out on the hard water. I know I would of had to change my short even though I have a floatation suite.. Thanks for the report and again glad to hear everyone got out safe......

That was and still is my nightmare, I always think about a crack opening through the holes inside the hut while I'm fishing, and then I think there's no chance. Well I guess it could happen. That's just unbelievable crazy. I'm glad you made it out ok.

Holy smokes. Glad you guys are ok. Gear can all be replaced lives cant. I will tell you right now the lesson I just learned rom this post is, I will never be taking my floater suit off again while I am out there. That bar none is my biggest fear when I am out on the ice. There was a couple out fishing last year over by Gilford who had about a 12inch crack open up under their feet. Which by the look of it was nothing compared to that.

Holly macaroni......would be throwing out my underwear out if that happened to me. Arnie
Wow, that's pretty scary. Arnie, if you are planning to go out for whiteys soon let me know, not wise to go alone with this kinda stuff happening. I was planning to hit the same area either tomorrow or Tuesday, but now have serious second thoughts about going alone.

Sounds strange but sometimes, when you only have what looks to be the cleanest, purest, most solid ice ever, large booming cracks can happen as ice expands and pressure builds. My preference is to be on the good ice but which also has some of the white (less dense) stuff around as well as some existing cracks so there is room to expand and compress so the pressure can be releases more slowly and not with one big crack in the good stuff. If ice is expanding, it's got to go somewhere and having all solid ice with no cracks means it will break somewhere to release the pressure. So very glad to hear that this only ended up being an experience to share with others and thanks for the warning for that region.
