You can see the cracking and open water in this somewhat visible picture. Areas that have been mentioned are quite visible if you understand what you are looking at.

Todays pic is up, if you zoom in you can faintly see the crack along the N/W shore and looks like another one running N/S along with west side. Satellite 17 Jan

I flew over the entire lake yesterday between 12:30 and 1pm ish and saw that large crack very clearly. At the high altitude I was flying, it was impossible to make out if that crack was open water or thin clear ice. However, at a few spots at the mouth of KBay, I could see what looked like clear streaks across the snow on the ice on the lake side which suggested that a west wind had caused some water to spray over top of the ice on the lake side (and so I suspect there was some open water (if not now, very recently). That crack ran a long way along that side of the lake and was quite wide, zigzagging in and offshore (some places more or less touching shore). Be careful out there and hopefully the weekend will help to solidify things.

Couldn't see out the other side of the plane, which flew almost directly overhead in a line from the east side of Cooks over Snake and Fox and then directly over to the east side of Couchiching. This huge crack did not enter KBay. The crack pattern clearly showed it was attached to the ice that was still attached to land on the west shore....and now seeing the video of the rescue at 9th line Oro-Med. on that same day later in the afternoon, why that occurred. I saw that the crack came very close to shore in that area (south of Carthew Bay). The one time I didn't bring a small camera with me on the plane! I could have taken a couple of very good photos because as we were passing overhead, it was nice and clear. I've never gotten to fly over Simcoe in that line and during the winter at that too - very cool to see and you get a different appreciation for what things look like (much better than the satellite photos that are made available by various gov't sites).

Yes that is always where the pressure crack is there.....just South of Carthew......if it is going to open up it would be there.
