"Here the MNR just stocks more and more lake trout that nobody really wants..."
12footspringbok: I hear you and appreciate your opinion. I also respect the rather "large" bow you managed a couple years ago (avatar)......
Lakers were definitely not my first choice for the "GB" body of water. Agreed?
I lived through the boom years of the '80s and its spring trolling for rainbow; also the '90s and the addition of downrigging into the summer months for rainbow/salmon, ...and some really large salmon compared to today's catches. No disagreement here.
Since I keep a few fish (until the one in the freeze needs to be replaced....), it's the fight that keeps my boat going out ("also, not having married rich helps,.... LOL"). The fight these lakers put up has been impressive. Generally as good as any bows -- just at a deeper level, and without the prized jump or two! I think I'm slowly learning to appreciate lakers for what I've got. It's not my first choice, either. But leaving the dock for lakers, or waiting for a quick huge from Paul,.... GONE!!!!

Do you think Lakers = smoker might be because that's one way that people will eat them (tolerate)? Smaller and with the skin/oil line removed, ....now you have some options! Good success rate for release now vs late summer. Surface temperature 39oF. "Com'on spring!"

All the best on the water.
I didn't mean to disrespect the lakers with that comment, it was meant to disrespect the MNR and their stocking plans lol.
I'm all for a balanced fishery and don't mind a little laker action either but stocking hundreds of thousands of lakers on top of the thousands out there isn't a very good plan . Guys are catching lakers right now with bellies full of the baby lakers they stocked last month. Its time to slow down the amount they are stocking! How about some walleye, whitefish, atlantics, browns, cohos? No that would be too much fun wouldn't it?
