After a Musky hits the front of a slider-type jerk bait , the tail hook on the lure is positioned to do a lot of serious gill damage to the fish . I find it might also give the musky leverage to gain and rip free.
Is it necessary to have the tail hook on if Muskies usually attack the lure at the head or middle ?

you may be able to replace the tail hook with a double hook or even a sngle instead of the treble? That way Its less likely for damage to be done to you or the fish but there is still at least 1 hook at the back. Unless 100% of your fish are not on the back hook i would keep something there.

I find most of the time for them to hit the middle or head especially on the slider type Jerk Bait when moving side to side in the water . I may take the last treble hook off . Hate seeing it stuck in the gills . I will try with out fishermandan , you may be right about the balance . I will test it out tomorrow
