About 10 years ago I use to fish the sound and we did real well with Lymans. A buddy told me they aren't that good anymore and are not used. He said they are now made of plastic instead of wood.

Is this true? If they are still ok, can anyone suggest what colour pattern I should use Watermelon, Stairway to Heaven, etc?

Does anyone have any spoons they can recommend I try?

Thanks.

Lymans still work at Owen Sound. Stairway to Heaven is a personal favourite. The simple white body, black ladderback, red faced Lyman can prove effective as well. Moonshine, Michigan Stinger, Silver Fox and Sutton Spoons all produce.

Sorry for this faded image! (Web thief here....)

This was a buddy's "go-to" for G. Bay. I don't know the name but he called it "fire butt".

No argument that Lyman can work well for salmon. With the fewer numbers of salmon and variety of other species (trout) in Owen Sound, the head's up given for spoons may serve you well. They'll give you something that both fish will hit. A lighter, flutter spoons on a "cheater"/slider line and a "magnum" spoon off the main line.... "Checkmate"! My advice.

(ADVICE: Remembering what my lawyer wife tells me: "Advice is usually worth what you paid for it". But I suggested she marry me, ....so that's probably where I "learned" her that advice!!! -- Oh. I know I'm going to burn for that!)

Good luck on the water and take some photos to share!

Sure lymons work so will other cut plugs, i think the wooden ones out produce the plastic..
Spoon work well too. As do body baits in spring.
I think if enough people use a lymon some are bound to catch fish on them, so the hot lure is promoted..if you know what i mean..
Now if im trolling for salmon out of c wood later in the year hell yea a lymon is going on and getting rod play..
One of the plesures of salmon trolling is collecting various lures and colours..its a hobbie, passion and dam expensive..good luck
Ps. Lost that same lymon last aug in c wood..p### off..
Dew..

Lymans still work well in Owen sound as well as Lake Ontario. A stairway Lyman was our hottest lure on lake O 2 trips ago. The new Lymans are plastic, but you can buy a knock off called “best lure co” that in my opinion runs just as well as an original. I’ve run them side by side and they produce the same erratic action and are pretty much indistinguishable from a Lyman, and they are made of wood. We run Lymans in the spring on the sound, along with a bunch of different spoons and body baits. All take fish!

Well if there are no salmon in the Sound it would me morally wrong to sell those 20 or so wooden lymans to you .

Thanks lads. I will just go to the Sound with the mindset then that I am going for a boat ride. If I catch a fish it will be a bonus.

Cheers
