Using "SeaFoam" in Your Gas, What is Your Experience?

When I was out off Collingwood today my 40hp Merc 4 stroke decided it would not run at high speed. It would troll, but even then it was running rough.

When I came back in, I was talking to another fisherman who had just come in and when we were talking about my motor issue I mentioned I had started to use SeaFoam in my gas last year.

He said his marine mechanic had told him not to use it as it was too strong and would make your rubber fuel hoses deteriorate??

What experience have others had with SF?

I use it and like it. Follow the proper amount per litre and you should be good.

I use it and and premium gas no idea if it works or not, never had a problem with it, but i'll try any voodoo or hocus popocus magic to avoid dropping 10,000 on an outboard. Actually I've been running that stuff through most of my equipment.

Hey Ralph, I've used it in all my stuff for years, great stuff, never had an issue. Are you using Ethanol free gas? Very important IMO. I've both seen and used SF to solve rough running engines that had been run on Regular gas containing Ethanol. As for SF being too strong, very unlikely IMO. It is well documented that use of much higher than usual concentrations is helpful for really badly gummed up carbs.

Today, I put in a new fuel filter and checked hoses and fuel tank pickups.

No sign of any hose deterioration.

Motor ran fine on the water muffs today, so hopefully my problem is solved.

I’ve used seafoam for years without problem. If you let your gas sit for long periods of time and use fuel containing ethanol you will have problems over time. Shell and Canadian tire both have ethanol free fuel in their hitest.

Yup, Shell premium gas is ethanol free as gas at most marinas ..wouldn't run any else in my Honda ..

The husky station right beside Weber's on Hwy 11 north has ethonal free gas, cheaper than shell 94 for the most part as well. It's were i stop for gas on my way north.

And if you use you ctc mastercard you get the same amount of ct money as if you were at a crappy tire gas bar.

15 years running gas with up to 10% ethanol and never any issues however I have always used fuel stabilizers..
Or maybe because it's a Honda.. If boat sits more then a week I like to run the gas lines dry and then drain the carb screws..

I should add I throw sea foam in the first tank of gas of the new season for the last 8 years and no issues..

I use a full can of seafoam in the first full tank of gas for the season in my boat and have had no issues for years, as far as i can tell.

Although this year - first time out, I had issues getting the outboard running smoothly, but i don't think it was the seafoam, I am guessing old gas in the lines, since I had the boat idle for way too long...

sounds more like a carb issue than fuel but i wouldn't rule out water in the fuel
id give the carb good cleaning perhaps a rebuild first

It turned out it was a bad spark plug. Only running on 2 cylinders.

I don't put anything my tank except premium fuel.
If you want additives CTC has a ton of stuff for you!
(Fuel stibil for storing though)

and that was going to be my next suggestion every time my engine runs bad its either water in fuel, dirty/water in the carb or sparkplug fouled or gap changed

most decent 2 stoke oils have all the additives your motor needs according to the manufacturer if its 4 stoke good hi octane ethanol free fuel should be all you need
