AS many of you know, I'm an old time square dance caller and my wife plays the fiddle.
This exposes us to a lot "country music".
Starting this Sunday night at 8pm on the PBS channels in the USA, is the first of an 8 part series entitled "Country Music" produced by Ken Burns, on the history of country music.
Ken Burns produced the series on the US civil war, Jazz and baseball. Anything he does is good. I've seen the preview, which I think is on again tonight at 8pm and it doesn't disappoint.
I know this is not fishing or hunting, but I know many of you are C&W fans and I wanted to ensure you knew about this.

Love both kinds of music, country and western! Glad it's a program on the history of country because if it was about what trashville markets as country today I would want nothing to do with it. Thanks for sharing I like Ken burns stuff too and will check it out!

Yeah alot of crap today being labeled as country.
You can also get a good country history lesson every weekend on sxm radio. Outlaw country channel 60 From 2-6 catch the Alamo Jones show. Usually good for a few stories and some great music, everything from Hank all the way to Hank 3.

Have been watching as much of the series as my schedule will allow, really enjoying it. Interesting to learning how singers/musicians got their start. A couple from last night were Johnny Cash and Brenda Lee.

My wife and I have watched the 1st 3 episodes so far and thoroughly enjoyed them. Last nights episode 4 is on the PVR as we were out at a Calvin Vollrath fiddle concert near Orillia. We are out tonight at a fiddle jam/dance, so #4 will get watched on Friday night.
Vollrath is a well known (in fiddle circles) fiddler from western Canada. Great show. He is Orangeville tonight.
I have found the series very educational, learning how it all started and how various musicians and regions have influenced the evolution of the music.
I have found as usual, Ken Burns has produced an excellent series.

I have recorded it and just finished up the 3rd or 4th episode(Hank's episode) and I have to say it is an incredible watch. Earning lots of the back stories on most of my country heroes. Going to toot my own horn a bit and be proud of the fact I am in my early 30s (for another half week at least) and I was able to pick out around 90 percent of the artists and interviewees before they were introduced but am at the same time a bit ashamed of the other 10 percent I hadn't heard of considering their contributions to what I consider a huge part of my life! Like the Maddox bros and rose...i had always wanted a "nudie" suit to wear on stage and had no clue it was them that started it! Have also considred Chet Atkins to be one of the most talented and gifted guitar players ever and didn't know his start was with the carter's. Thank you Ken burn and sdc for pointing out it was coming on!
