Hey Bud, I to know a little about depression but mine was when I got diagnosed as having Rheaumatoid Arthritis and all seemed lost, my wrist's became so bad I couldn't hold, c### or shoot a side arm. no hiking, foraging, fishing, hunting and it was for a extended period of time. But after several trials with several meds (5) I can tell you life is good and worth fighting every day for. I was told by a much older and wiser rheumatoid sufferer quote "every day you dwell is a day loss" his words spoke clearly to me to shake it off and move forward using every day to it's fullest. These are not words of kindness for you, but I feel your pain and truly hope you have a great recovery, and please do not miss going to the hunt camp every day is a new day take advantage of it!

Thank you. Yes, I agree: we have to live each day to the fullest. And if we don't it's a day lost. Sorry to hear about your Arthritis, and I know exactly how you feel about trying different meds until you find the right one.

Seeing what others are up to on a daily basis on here is a bright light in my day on the best of days, I can only imagine how much more meaningful it could be on the darkest of days. Go get some meese!

You guys convinced me. I am going to go. Went out for a walk today in the autumn air. Haven't been out for a walk in 6 weeks. It felt great. Thanks again.

Hey Deer Hunter

For sure go on that Moose trip. I don't hunt anymore but I do fish and days I go out, I always feel much better, even if I don't catch anything. Relaxing and communing with nature--you just feel better.

I've been retired 20 years and I don't profess to know a lot about depression, but when I worked, I had a demanding Executive job role.

I'm not trying to preach to you, but here are a few things that helped me cope with job pressures and keep my life in perspective..

I lived my life by LISTS and I still do. I find it a whole lot easier to figure out what to do when I see things on paper, rather than trying to keep them all straight in my head. I got a lot of satisfaction out of and still do, on being able to cross an item off my " to do" list.

I kept telling myself practice "self-discipline" and I still do.

A motivational speaker I admired defined self-discipline as:

"The ability to make yourself do, what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like doing it or not!".

Maybe these thoughts will help. In any event, I post lots as you know and I will continue to do so.

Good luck.

SDC

Thank you SDC for you positive words. As I mentioned in my previous post, you guys convinced me to go. And I am actully feeling better just thinking about it. It has been about a year since I looked at any of my rifles. I used to tinker with them every week. I am on some new meds and I hope they work for me. Thanks again.

deerhunter: We are heading "north of Sudbury" in the morning to chase birds for a couple days. Last year about this time another member had a great trip (with photos). Your daily average was 3 birds/ATV. A year later now (and just before the "moose patrol" advances....!), so we'll see how this year's crop looks. Our moose gang that just returned from L. Nipigon area and saw a good crop of birds this years. So, we'll see(?)

Photos = success/bragging rights
No Photos =............ ("you can fill in the blanks here I'm sure!")

Thanks bud. I am a little sorry I missed the grouse trip.

QUOTE (Knuguy @ Oct 03, 2019 - 06:33 pm)
Ralph has offered some good solid advice. I have suffered from depression as well. It runs in my family as it does in so many.
Even as short walk in the wood is like a tonic, IMO. These days that's so highly recommended that doctors are practically prescribing it!  For me, a day up North paddling a canoe and fishing is really wonderful for my spirits. Fish, as they say, are a bonus,
That advice from the motivational speaker is stellar. I found it helpful to push myself into some activities when I didn't really 'feel like it". I put that expression in quotes because I got so tired of hearing my ex-wife saying it when there was something that wasn't much fun to be done. . My thought was " What the $%@#* does that have to do with it"? Pushing myself to do something, esp with others, got me out of my own head----letting me look outward to the world rather than inward at my own (perceived) probs).
I strongly recommend a psychologist or other counselor who practice Cognitive behavior Therapy. Lot's of info  on Google, of course.  One of the basic tenets of CBT is that our feelings are governed by our thought processes.. For my generation there seemed to be a lot of emphasis on feelings and expressing them so it almost seemed that feelings were primary. CBT shoots that idea full of holes.
I'm not such an avid list maker as Ralph but I do find a sense of satisfaction in being able to cross things off a list.  In addition, if my brain starts to get cluttered with 'stuff I gotta do', esp if it gets to the point where it's keeping me from falling asleep, then dumping things out of my head and unto a sheet of paper is a great relief.
These things worked for me. I hope you find some of it useful. All the best to you.

Thank you so much for your post. I have started seeing a psychologist. I think this guy is great. I had others before, but none really helped me. After a session with him I feel better, and I am hoping my new meds help too. I don't believe this psychologist is big with CBT, but I will see. I have only had four session with him. And I absolutely understand you when you say "A walk in the woods is like tonic." Thank you again.
