Hi fisherman!! Went out today from waub to do some smallie fishing and it looked like it would be one perfect day as the wind was very light and temps were comfortable. I ventured out to a location where my dad and I had limited out two days earlier and began to drift my gulp alive minnows and leeches. Yes what a great drift and weather, the old fella will sure be sorry he didn't come out today. Ha!ha! Five hours later and not a single bass hit only the frustration of four cut offs which I presumed were gars as I had witnessed a couple porpoising on the surface.
At this point it sure looked like my first skunk of the season. I decided to give up on the smallies and move into shallower weedy water and try my luck on largemouth at one of my favorite little holes closer to the launch. I put on a gulp leech under a float and splitshot and tossed it towards shore in 5 fow within seconds down she went and the fight was on, a decent bass I presumed and to my amazement as I brought the fish to the boat was a hog of a crappie! Biggest one I have caught in several years in this area of the bay. I tossed my line right back to the same spot and wham!! Down went the float another lunker crappie. I knew now there had to be a school of them there, I was right as the next hour would produce another fourteen a four pound pike and a nice eating size largemouth. It sure paid off today by changing locations and target species if one doesn't produce, what a great fish dinner and I avoided the dreaded skunk for another day.
Pics to follow from Jerry. Good fishing to all!! By the way the crappies weighed 1.76 pounds and 1.56 pounds
