My son and I have been enjoying getting out turkey hunting. On opening day we had a bird roosted the night before so we knew where to start. We got in close and the bird was gobbling steady. My son was a little closer to the bird than I was but when it came in it wasn’t close enough for his 20 gauge. The bird hung around for an hour but wouldn’t give us a chance before it wandered off.
We had heard other birds across the road so we got closer and called . They immediately lit up and started closing the gap. I set my son up 20 yards from the lip of a hill and when they crested it he picked one and shot. First bird of the season down.
The next morning we had another hennned up tom that kept getting led away from us by the hens. We would get within 100 yards and call to the tom and after 10 minutes the hens would pull him away. We set up on this bird 5 different times with the same result and covered 4 or 5 kilometres. They finally went silent or moved to where we couldn’t hear them.
Monday morning dawned bright and beautiful with gobbling birds across from the house. We called a pair of toms within 2 yards of getting shot when they saw something they didn’t like and moved off.
Tuesday morning we tried a new spot and were set up in a spot where we were surrounded by 4 gobblers. Eventually they all flew down and we started calling. After ten minutes a pair started sneaking in. The one was rushing my sons position when he flattened it and I shot clean up and got the second one. A successful morning.
