My son and I got out for an afternoon hunt on Thursday as we had slept in the last two mornings because of rain. We heard a gobble from our first setup but the bird was not interested enough to close the gap so we moved closer.
The second setup was in a spot closer to the turkeys and they replied with gusto! They gobbled all the way in to about 70 yards then putted twice and left. They certainly saw something they didn’t like! We checked our camo saw nothing out of order so we took a long walk to get on the other side of them and started calling. We were about to leave when I spotted a bunch of jakes moving in quietly . At one point I think I could have killed four with one shot their heads were so close together! I waited until one got away from the bunch and took my shot . Bird down!
We tried hunting on Friday morning which broke misty and overcast with a stiff wind. We never heard a gobble after covering a lot of country but we did spook a nice tom out of an open pasture field.
Saturday morning we heard distant gobbles but nothing that was in calling range. We tried three different areas but no takers. By Saturday evening we were getting tired and I thought about taking a morning off to recharge. My son had put himself to bed at 7:30 so I knew he was getting worn down but when I checked his phone he had set his alarm so I thought if he’s game to go so am I.
Sunday morning we heard a distant gobble and tried to get close but it was too far to call. We went back to the truck and parked in a different area and started calling . We moved toward a distant gobble and he answered our calls and came in hard . One shot and my son had his second bird.
On our walk out I heard another bird gobbling so we got to some high ground and called. We had two respond from different directions and the race was on. We setup and waited and called sparingly. Once the birds got to 200 yards we stopped calling and let them come. Before long a blue head bobbed through the bush at 20 yards and I sealed the deal. I think my son was as happy about my bird as his own. It was an easy walk back to the truck with a pair of turkeys on our backs. Good times!
