Got out for opener today and man the Whitefish were active! Too bad I was off my game. Managed one whitefish topside, 3 lost in the hole, and 5 small trout all released. Lost a number of others.

It was sketchy, don’t do what I did. 2.5” ice with snow and slush.

Managed another today, it was a very slow day for me today. One whitefish one trout all in the first 30min then dead the rest of the day. Marked a ton of nice sized fish but they were finicky. As I write this many buddy is trying to redeem himself for walleye with the night bite..... I had enough. Beautiful day though.

What are you catching the whites on?

Jig with no bait. Sometimes a minnow head. On bottom, if you lift it higher than half an inch off bottom it’s too high. Fish shallow, less than 45ft. As shallow as 15ft. There’s no shortage of deep water in this lake, I see people set up deep all the time, I go shallow. Often in the deep 50+ foe I mark lots but they aren’t feeding like the ones up shallow.

Great info, it’s my goal this year to catch a whitie. I’m in the Minden area. Any other recommendations you have? At this point I’m just picking lakes off of fish-online.
