I fish on gull lake in minden every year and have a blast. It all depends on what species of fish you want to catch if your looking for big high quantity lakers fish the main part of the lake ( this is where I fish) . If you want pan fry lakers with the chances of catching big whities and sh!t load of herring fish miners bay. If you want the rainbows and huge Lakers fish the mouth of the river but it doesn't always freeze. Biggest laker that i caught last year was a 13.7 lbs. and when fishing lakers on the main part there is a great chance you will see the big ones crusing around the top of your holes.

Going up to Miner's Bay with a buddy for the first time at first ice as I can't wait for the whitefish and lakers at Simcoe - should be safe ice up there sooner. Going to fish at Daves fish huts as they're only $35 a head - he said that small minnows are the best bait and you can get a scoop for $4 at the gas station in Norland - he will send an e-mail as soon as the ice is safe. If we go up again I'll just take the Quickfish 3.......
You can keep 2 lakers, 12 whitefish! and unlimited herring but we'll only take enough home for supper (hopefully we'll catch some ).... Herring can be great eating as long as they're not full of worms (years ago we caught a bunch of herring up at Nipissing by Iron Island when I lived on Nipissing Rd just south of Sturgeon Falls and they were just full of worms - no one wanted to eat them)
I prefer eating the the small lakers and whitefish anyway but it seems some are not so small...... A picture from Miner's Bay
I think a meet and and greet up there would be great - perhaps late March as they're open until March 31 - should be good weather then......

I find Miners Bay real slow until mid to late January (hence the low price per person for Early ice)...then the fishing really picks up. If you want to catch a lot of big whites and lakers go to the main part of the lake and if you bows there in there as well just have to know where to go. You would be better off open holing it then renting from Dave IMO

I am much happier moving around and seeing the lake!! I've just never been there and wouldn't know where to start. I like the adventure and my girlfriend likes the walk!
I have a very open mind when it comes to advice on species and lakes I have no experience fishing.
If you say I should have better luck fishing the main lake, I'll try the main lake. (when there is ice of course)

Thanks for the input guys - just going to try the hut rental route first and then go from there - I figure it's worth $35 - the open holing sounds good especially if there's rainbows out there - will let you know how it goes - also if a M&G wouldn't work then how about just a bunch of guys going fishing - maybe

The main part of the lake is easy to fish find the groups of huts and fish around them. Miners Bay has way to many huts in a close proximity. If someone happens to get a big one everyone's line within 60 feet of them will all be tangled.

I remember seeing a lot of huts out there when I was driving past on my way to Minden when I was ice racing. Is there a couple public access spots that are easy to find?

Profisher - the guy Dave that the runs the huts at Miner's Bay is going to send me a message when the ice is ready and I'll post it here as soon as he does...... it's looking good for colder weather and safe ice will probably come sooner up there......
Elk Hunter posted that the fishing is slow at first ice and to wait until the end of Jan but I'm going up anyway just to get out on the ice and wet a line - we'll see how it goes .....
