Well decide I should try my hand at apples sauce this morning. 1st batch was good enough for me to make another batch. Really not that hard to make and tastes pretty good. I might go for 3 batches. Only makes 4, 500ml jars. I want to try making apple leather, read about it on net too. Might make good deer bait too.

Nice, I used to make mine and freeze it, well since I had a bunch of empty jars around and a pressure canner, I made a bunch that way. Also made 11 jars of carrots. 41 jars of salmon were made a few months ago.

Fisherman, I was going to just freeze it but don't have a lot of room in the freezer and plan on putting a couple deer in there soon.

I read that freezing the apple sauce works well, can you confirm that for me. It would be easier then sealing it. I ended up making 3 batches.

Sabmgb, yes freezing works very well, I've done that for about 20 years. I used the medium sized plastic peanut butter jars and sometimes had a dozen jars in the freezer that would last up to a year. No freezer burn or funny taste. I wanted to try canning this year to save room in the freezer. Once I take a jar out of the freezer it would last a month in the fridge, I use it mainly for morning oatmeal. Cortland apples, a bit of brown sugar, cinnamon and a dash of ground ginger.

fisherman, thank you. I used fuji apples, mix of white and yellow sugars, lemon juice and put a strip of lemon peel in while boiling, and a bit of cinnamon,

sabmgb, we had always froze ours, flat on cookie sheets in medium or large ziplocks. We did them this way as they doubled as a freezer pack for picnics, travel and fishing trips. Just my 2 cents.

I like that idea, wouldn't take up much room in freezer that way. If I do any more batches I will try the ziploc way

Well that is a good idea. I was up north this weekend, got lazy and bought some of the small instant oatmeal packets. Yuck. Not close to what I make, Oatmeal, a plop of applesauce, and a small hand full of raisins and cranberries. Frozen ziplock bags of applesauce will work fine, thanks.

I might add that we also freeze our squash this way for camping. Buttercup is our fav, so we normally get a bushel, bake, peel, mash with butter/salt pepper then freeze some of them flat like an ice pack. All ready to heat and serve when thawed and honestly you wouldn't know it was frozen.
On a side note keeping your freezer full is more efficient from what I read, and stacking food like this will help maintain temperature for a longer period in event of power outage.

So I have put about 8 ziploc bags in freezer, sure a lot easier than canning. Question seems like a lot of members do apple sauce, what are your favourite apples. I have used fuji, and spy. The spy came out very tart, where the fuji were sweet.

Courtland, if you can get C grade they are much cheaper. Otherwise all apples are good for sauce, mix the varieties.. If you have a dehydrator slice them, spray a little lemon juice on and dehye them until finished / crisp. they are the best snacks for hiking, fishing and sitting in the blind. Except Northern Spy which you want to make pies and apple brown betty with and then share with me. Congrats on the doe. If your butchering the doe and making sausage try putting some apple in the mix you will be surprised.

All this talk about apple sauce served to remind me I had not made any for years.

Made some this week and followed the basic recipes except I did add some cinnamon and about 1/2 cup of maple syrup.

It is now in the freezer in containers. I can use it with pork or have some with my cereal in the mornings.

Most mornings, my breakfast is cereal, fruit and yogurt. The fruit can tend to be anything, dependent on what is in season and on special. This week it is honeydew melon.

Maple syrup, not everyones forte. But, I fall on the other side of the rainbow of foods. Brussel sprouts, any kind of peppers and there will be puke flying at high velocity, along with some of those cheeses that smell like locker room running shoes.
