Managed to get out earlier today to search for big fall bass.
I was hoping for a good day on the water as I am not sure how much more I will get out this year.
Weather started cool, but ok for the first of October and I knew it was going to warm up. Launched just before sun up and started off with two quick smallies within 15 minutes of getting on the water. Thought this was going to be the start of another action packed day, but it was not to be. After those two fish I didn’t even feel another bite until after 10am.
Was honestly thinking about packing it in just before I caught my next fish. I had covered a lot of water and couldn’t entice any action. I had mentally prepared myself to drift through one area again and if I didn’t get a bite, I would pick up. Glad I stayed as I managed a small muskie and a tank smallie within 10 minutes of each other.
Overall - it was a slow day. Over the course of about 7 hours I only managed 4 smallies and 2 small muskie. All but one of the fish came on a chatterbait. The second, smaller muskie came on a small swim bait.
The good news - the best smallie was probably pushing my personal best. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my bump board or a scale. Rough measurement in the pics below.
I was hoping for more action, but any outing where I catch a smallie like this is worth it.
