Anyone disconnecting their smart chargers during the winter is doing nothing to help their batteries. Does it work topping up only once a month sure it does. Your just shortening how long your lead acid deep cycle has the potential to last for. Smart chargers are to be left connected and plugged in at all times. They have a float, maintain and even repair built in and they monitor the battery continuously. I used to sell both deep cycle batteries and chargers. I had to learn everything about how they worked and what was best for them. Without getting into specifics just don’t over complicate what your doing. Connect the charger every single time your off the water and leave it plugged in no matter how long your not using them for. Check your distilled water in the spring before you use them and top up if needed. If your a tourney fisherman and pound all day long in the summer on your deep cycles you would have any to check it out distilled water more often.

I guess it depends on the type of batt. I hook up my sonar batt(AGM?) occasionally and it gets fully charged very quickly----minutes maybe
It's not the fact that it only takes minutes to recharge, when batteries sit idle, (not on maintenance charge), they sulfate. It builds up over time and the battery can't be charged back to it's full potential. The amount of power (money) it uses, is far less than what a new battery costs. Your wallet, cheers.

That’s correct.
It does not depend on AGM or lead acid. As I said what you do will work but it will also reduce the life of your battery. If you want to get the full life out of your batteries leave them on a smart charger when not in use. It’s simple.

Just got them all and have not hooked them up yet. They are for my Yak to power the MinnKota Ultra that I have not bought as yet.Once I uncrate them they will be either in use or hooked up to the Noco charger. The Noco is built to leave them hooked up.

Arnie..welcome to the world of Noco and I am sure you will be pleased with the unit
Again.......all my batteries are on charge 24/7 365 days per year if possible
no 2-4 month top ups
the only complaint with noco is their clips...I have had 2 that were quite weak in the spring tension and just replaced those.other option is to hook up with the bolt system...that's airtight

Thx guys for that info. I had assumed, incorrectly, that if the batt was not discharging that every thing was tickedy boo.

Many of the things you were doing were what you should do 30-40 years ago. That was the best policy back before battery technology improved and smart chargers were created to do a better job than we can.
Technology moves us forward we need to change what we are used to. Great news in this case we buy less batteries over time when letting the smart charger do it’s job.

A better picture of the Noko two bank charger, you can also get them up to four banks. You can charge for batteries all of different types at the same time if you like with the four bank charger. Of course with the two banks charger you can charge only two different batteries one could be lead acid the other one lithium all you have To do is to set them with the push of a button. Noco charger is very easy to use.

My lead acid starter battery pictured here it’s on a smart charger. It too will stay hooked up all winter. Look at the top of the picture at the little black box. The red light signifies that it is not charging right now. When it reaches a certain threshold the green Light will come on,Which signifies it is charging until it reaches the upper threshold at that time a red light will come back on and going to rest mode.
