Just wondering...has Lake Nip been declared ice free yet? Also, does anybody know the link to the current NASA satellite image of Lake Nipissing? Thanks

The lake is still covered with ice by the satellite image. Here at the west arm it’s just starting to let go at any location that has any water movement.
Here is a link for satellite view. Neil had posted it a few years bac.
http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/ice/ Select the current conditions tab near the top of the page then on that page you will see a link to recent great lakes satellite images 3/4 of the way down the page. From there you can select individual great Lakes or all of them. Cheers

Lake is still completely ice covered. Even saw the odd snowmobile and atv buzzing across earlier this week along the South Shore. Creeks and rivers are open with heavy flows. Certainly wouldn’t take any chances at this point.

Thanks for the feedback! Hard to believe...being that it has been smoking hot down here in Collingwood. By the way Randy, that website is what I was referring to. One just has to adjust the date at the bottom of the satelite image. Maybe we should guess when the official ice out date will be this year. ...I will be safe and take April 28th...that is the historical average...lol ...Anybody else want to take a shot at it?? ...Can you tell I'm already getting excited? lol

South Bay is pretty much open to Beacon Island as of this afternoon. There is a little bit of ice left but it is mostly gone. I have heard others say the main lake is usually a week or so after South and Callander Bays open up. The 28th might be pretty close! It is nice to see open water and the waterfowl again. The local osprey pair were back last Tuesday and we saw the first loon of the season today. Merganser and mallards have been around for several days as well. The red marker out from Beacon Island has a friend today. There is a green marker beside it that must have broken free from over at the south shore. Oh and the lake level is up 18.5" from noon on April 10th till noon today as measured at the outlet of Nipissing to the French River.
