Day 2 was a success!!
Morning started off with gobbles in every direction, lots horny birds all over the place!
We eventually had one Tom come around the corner 100yrds out and take a look at our decoys, he wouldn't close the distance at all and walked off.
At around 7:00 a hen walked into the field and came over to us and hung around for a bit giving off the occasional yelp. Didn't take long for a Jake to walk in from across the road and start strutting all the way over us. The hen wasn't interested and left slowly, luckily I was able to coax the jake into hanging out with the decoys with purrs and clucks inching him forward bit by bit.
I use an old Baikal over under and absolutely love the gun (super cool that it says made in the USSR on it) but I'm not comfortable making long shots so I kept waiting trying to get the bird closer. After 10min he turned and started heading in the same direction the hen went which was enough waiting around for me and took one shot dropping the bird. Turned out to be just shy of 30yrds and I probably could've shot sooner.
The scary thing was when I fired my shot the action on the gun flew open and ejected the shells, I wouldn't have been able to fire a follow-up shot if I wanted to! I must have not closed the gun properly in the morning attempting to be quiet. It was a good reminder of gun safety.
All and all great morning and weather with lots of action!
