Another incredibly successful hunt and attempt at scratching that never ended itch!
Spotted three new great big Toms move into our field last night while putting the birds to bed and decided to get out this morning before the rain.
Got to our spot with Gaston and Gobo well before shooting light, we set up at the opposite side of the field where we knew the birds were roosting. By 6am 4 Toms had flown down and began strutting. One of which broke off from the others and flew down somewhat close to our decoys, not quite shooting range... yet.
Shortly after roughly a dozen hens flew down to where the majority of Toms were. The Tom that was closest to us obviously couldn't decide what he wanted this morning because he kept making a small circle back and forth between us and the flock.
After calling him in bit by bit he finally stepped into the small shooting lane we had through some snarly brush and Gaston takes the first shot, DOWN! Immediately the rest of the Toms started to run over and begin beating the crap out of their dead buddy. I line up and WHACK, down goes the second bird! AND THEN A THIRD TOM jumps on top and starts attacking the second dead bird, Gobo takes the third bird and the flock finally takes off... we are in awe at what just happened
I've heard about this reading my OOD magazines but never seen it in real life let alone with three trophy birds at once. We agreed that we'll likely never see a spectacle like that for many many years.
Turkey might be my favorite game to go after due to all the action and interaction you get with these birds, I wish everyone gets a chance to experience something like this at least once.
Back on the train heading to the rat race all before 8am:) Best of luck everyone, shoot straight!
