Beautiful ! I am new to GBay out of Oak Bay marina. Trying to catch my 1st laker. Was out Tuesday in low winds off Gin Rocks fishing 30-40 fow.. only one whitefish. Using downrigger at about 1.5 to 2 mph in 49F water, green/silver flasher, NK spoon various Color’s mostly green/silver hammered..not seeing much on finder. Can you advise on my technique and location? Would love to have your success once or twice - I catch and release.

i dont know where you launch from but i would target areas betwenn 70 to 100 feet . lakers can be higher in the water column right now but when the water warms up close to bottom is were you should be. a selection of spoons in green or blue should work moonshine nk or anything similar should work . trolling 1.5 to 2.2 mph.lighter spoons work better at slower speeds. heavier spoons need to run faster. any kind of drop or humps could hold fish. lakers arnt too fussy if you mark any you should get bit. good luck.

You can't argue with the previous suggestions. And recognize that there are ranges of variables for each factor considered. Example: In August last year, a buddy raised his lure to 50 ft over 100+ fow (temp. was high 60oF to 70o+F) looking for rainbow/salmon. First fish, ...a Laker! Go figure!
A key sonar tip is "any kind of drop or humps could hold fish". If you're running a steady, flat bottom screen start moving in and out along different contours looking for depth variations ("humps/bumps" on the bottom). Lakers relate to this structure.
Good luck on the water. And have fun solving the fish puzzle for your area.

Thanks for your thoughts. I launch out of Port Severn. Have either of you had success at Gin Rocks (west side mid way up Beausolei) as I have been focusing there. Or should I move on?

Well this thread has great interest to me as I plan on fishing salmon this year in that part of GBay.....I am stationed in a trailer Park in Waubaushene. I have fished lightly in GBay in past years but never really went hardcore at them.....I may be wrong but the salmon usually start in mid June around Gin Rocks and probably you would be better to go towards Beckwith around this time. If winds are rough trailer and launch around Cedar Point to be more protected.

Grandpa i have no pics for you again.. out from 8am to 11:30am a beauty of a morning. Moved away from Gin Rocks to south east of tip of beausoleil and east of Awenda a few miles. 130 to 65 ft pretty flat. Temp was 43F at 50 ft and 50F near surface, 1.7 to 2 mph - not sure what temp is good for Lakers..48 to 50?. Saw no significant humps and spotted no fish….so the search for both will continue tomorrow. I did see a boat in tight at Awenda point will try there tomorrow.
