“Man suffers severe burns after small explosion in ice fishing hut on Lake Couchiching
One person was rushed to the hospital with severe burns after a fire on Lake Couchiching in Orillia. According to provincial police, the angler was heating a can of food in a fishing hut on Wednesday morning when it exploded. The man suffered burns to his face and, according to a fire official, was unconscious at the scene. He was taken to the hospital and will be airlifted to a trauma centre for further treatment. The man's identity was not released”

my bet is it was a closed can. that be like a pressure cooker, sure wouldn't want to be around it when it exploded, the heat would be intense. hard lesson to learn that had to really hurt.
Cans are lined with plastic, have never noticed that when I empty cans into a pot?

Cans are lined with plastic, seems kinda gross to put heat to that! Im sure there are plenty of people that do though. Hope everyone is alright!
Yep, can are lined with plastic so people shouldn't heat food in the can (as was done in the long past). One of the things technology has brought to us and really have not made it well known to the public so some are still heating the food in the can and at high temp so the plastic lining will melt into the very hot food in the can (and then into us). It's a coating on the inside of the can to prevent rusting/corrosion/etc. - to help keep food in cans last longer. The plastic shouldn't be noticed if done well.

Yes cooking anything in the can is bad. When I was younger this was very common when camping. My neighbour who worked at a canning factory told me never to do this, and explained why. The can is not a cooking grade metal and can leach the chemicals in the metal into the food. Also the coating that lines the can can leach chemicals into the food when heated. Even if the liner does not melt from the heat, it can leach chemicals into the food as it gets hot. The liner is in the can for storing your food safely in your cupboard up to and including the expiration date. Also when cooking food in your microwave, or reheating leftovers use the proper containers. Don't use styrofoam or cheap thin plastic. Best practice would be to use microwave safe glass or solid crockery, as long as it does not have metallic finishes. There are still videos online of people camping and cooking in cans. As mentioned in another thread, don't believe everything you see on the video channels. If you have a question, take the time to find out the entire answer.

Just to add to this list do not microwave food in margarine tubs....it leaches plastic into your food.

Many years ago a friend of mine put a closed can of Beefaroni on an open fire on a cast iron grate. After a few minutes of direct heat the can exploded and the fire was extinguished temporarily and everything went dark. When the fire magically re-ignited after a brief second, my buddy had a massive cut under his eye from the metal top grazing him. We never found any pieces of the Beefaroni can. We did find the cast iron grate split in half about 30 ft away from the fire. To this day we still refer to it as The Beefaroni Blowout. F'in scary situation. Could have been much worse if that grate came whizzing by us in the opposite direction. I feel for this poor guy!

Back many years ago on Simcoe ( in our young teens) my buddy & I had 2 huts out , we stopped at the first one & lit the propane stove & barred out the holes then we went to the second hut to do the same, while we were their i hear a loud BANG , I looked at him & said what the F'' was that, & he looked at me with a stupid face & said O F"" I put a can of chili con carni on the stove before we left & forgot to poke a hole in the lid.Well let me tell ya it was a 4x8 hut fully insulated with white styrofoam what a mess..But we were very lucky nobody was in the hut at the time of the explosion. But the CO'S did give us some weird looks for the rest of the season when they checked us..

As teens we heated beans in a can over a fire when fishing but never since. Also no plastics at all in microwave. The last time was when I put something in a container labelled "Safe for Microwave" into the M'wave The label was partly right---the microwave was undamaged but the container was all warped and destroyed.

Arnie.
Completely agree. This may be a bit of a shocker too but even "microwave safe" plastics leach....they are "safe" from melting and getting destroyed but they leach stuff (I had a friend who studied plastic contaminants and had tested this specifically and warned me never to use plastics in microwaves because you will never know which ones will leach what chemicals. Use the corning type glass for your microwaving.
