Was going to look for herring when set out this morning, but last minute change of plans a buddy and I went to our favourite whitefish and trout lake. It’s a bigger lake and we weren’t sure of ice conditions. Set out around 9am and we appear to be the first ones on this lake this season, we had the lake to ourselves the whole day! Found highly variable ice. Some places had 6inch of 50/50, some places right near by had 1 inch black and two inch white. But the most important thing…. No slush!!! Walking was amazing, very easy to move around.
I managed 3 lakers, 12”, 19.5” and 23”. Lost two nice ones, could have been whitefish. My friend got 3 lakers under 12” and one at 18”, nice eater. He also caught a 6” whitefish, had to double take as ive never seen one so small, back down to grow bigger.
We had to move around to find consistent marks, tussled with a few suspected whitefish at the end before we packed up at 2pm. Fish came from 40-50fow. Simcoe bug and punch jigs with pinheads. Finally have a derby entry!

Nice to hear the walking was good. Hope it's the same around the lakes here after tonight's colder temps. For sure the snow has compressed down alot with the melt. The Simcoe bug, was that a top hook or were you just using that at the end of the line? Very nicely coloured trout.

Just the Simcoe Bug on its own, spooled with 4lb fluoro.

They were gorging on smelt fry about 1.5” and completely transparent., kinda cool to see. My buddy got them exclusively on a Northland Punch jig with a pinhead hooked right through the head… a deadly presentation in the these smelt filled lakes.
