Crazy weather, but great fishing.

Do you ever break tradition and throw a spoon?

Hi WF,

I fish all sorts of lures and baits and there is a time and place for many of them.

I do use spoons occasionally but mainly during warmer months when the fish is more active.

it's hard to suspend a spoon and when the water is that cold pike does not move too much and is not chasing lures so I prefer suspending jerkbaits and slow sinking plastic baits in cold water period.

It does not mean that you cannot catch a pike on a spoon in Spring but IMO it's much harder than on the other noted lures.

Very nice JB...I am also jealous. Enjoy my brother enjoy. Some nice pike there. And yes I also love to eat pike....just learn how to clean out the y-bones and you will also like pike.

Arnie

Thanks LF,

Yeah the pike is good eating. I usually grind the filets twice in a meat grinder and do the fried patties with eggs, flour and butter.

This way its delicious and you don't need to bother with poking out the Y-bones as they gets completely ground down.

I am going to try those fish burgers....great idea. Thank you.

Arnie

Give it a try, Arnie, for sure. I think you'll like it.

Good job! I'd like to try Balsam one day in my kayak for spring pike, but not really sure where to launch or park. I usually just fish the harbours of Lake Ontario.

You can park and launch for free at the canal access off Balsam Lake Drive just off #48. It is where the canal comes into Balsam from Mitchell lake. ROOK
