Slept in until lunch time on Tuesday, then got up and packed up the car. Drove up to the to the family home during the afternoon in the rain. After dinner watched my Leafs lose to the Devils, and watched the rain falling outside. Threw on the rain gear and boots and headed down to the lake to catch some crappie. So much for having the remaining full moon as a companion for the evening. It was pitch black with a steady light rain. Started fishing just after midnight and it didn't take long to get wet from head to toe. There were so many fish for the next few hours, it was almost impossible to cast without getting a hit or catching one. This continued right up to sunrise and throughout the morning. The only problem was, all the crappie I was catching were not crappie. Every fish that was caught was a five, six and seven inch bluegill. The rain became intermittent and the sun came out a few times and then the clouds would cover it again. A good breeze from the south was constant to add some motion to the water. Didn't matter what bait was cast, it was met by another, and another bluegill. I have never seen that many bluegill in one area in my life. I called my friend who was a few miles away from me and he was catching bluegill, sunfish, a few baby walleye and a few baby crappie. By the late afternoon it was time to give up, and head back to the house. Sixteen hours of fishing is a lot of time to target crappie, and not see any. No crappie when it was raining. No crappie after the rain. No crappie at all. Go figure. Had a blast getting out for a marathon night of fishing. Maybe a more appropriate statement would be, fishing all night and day at the bluegill carnival. Good luck to anyone getting out this weekend. Have a safe and Happy Easter.

I hope you have a comfortable lawn chair with you. I wouldn’t be able to stand that long.

You are definitely a committed fisherman, too bad the crappie didn’t want to come out and play. I know you enjoyed yourself anyway and I have a feeling that you’ll be on them next time! Do you ever keep a feed of bluegills?

I always lose track of time when fishing, and it's dissapointing when it's time to pack up. The consept of time gets lost out on the water. If the need to sit arises my new bucket doubles as a stool. My fear of spiders keeps me on my feet most of all. Even standing in one spot for any length of time, there is enough movement to keep a spider from catching a ride. The new bucket doubles as a seat and holds all my gear.

And lots of storage. Extra jacket, gloves, food and water etc. It's 18 inches high, 3 inches more than the average bucket. Fishing in a boat or from the dock it goes with me always.

Just one of those weird days of fishing. The crappie will be back next time. As for keeping bluegill. Nope. No bluegill or sunfish are ever kept unless I injure the fish and it won't survive being released.

Any idea what the water temp was? I live on Upper Buckhorn and I wasn't even thinking about tossing anything for a few more weeks but if that action is around I might have to!

Nope not a clue. I don't go fishing for crappie by water temperature and neither do the crappie. My friends started fishing for crappie in the Kawarthas on March 10th. I drove up on March 11th and caught around 50 crappie out away from the shore and kept 3 of them. Since then the crappie have moved, and with each individual lake you should find them "RIGHT NOW" where you would normally find them in mid April. I don't recommend driving three plus hours then go fishing for sixteen hours, have a nap then drive home again. But that is what I do, I have one addiction and it's fishing. My friend called me yesterday and said I was off by one day. I wanted to catch the crappie in the rain but should have waited until late Wednesday into Thursday. The crappie schools are swarming right now. He had 6 boats near his place yesterday and some more today. If I did not have Easter stuff to do today and tomorrow, I would already be there. I did say on an earlier post that I was going to fish less for crappie this spring just because of the early weather change. The early warm weather might interfere with the spawn later this spring, so just playing it by ear so far. I guess that jinxed me because now stuck down here hearing about all the fish my friends are catching.... Oh well.... I am almost always right to the day each year for the first great crappie fishing adventure for us. This year was off about 36 hours and missed it. LOL.

If this helps anybody, here is my post from last year in April. Today, Sunday and Monday will be great crappie fishing. Get out there, have fun, enjoy the early spring weather and good luck. Wish I could be out there as well. Stay safe.

Forgot about the pike. Next few days will also be great for catching pike on Balsam. And the crappie will be in and around where you would normally catch pike on Balsam in the spring. Don't forget to post some pictures of your fish.
