This trip had been in the works for a few weeks once we had come to terms with the hardwater season ending. Nicholas had heard reports of whitefish being caught in this lake and with many of the lakes remaining ice-covered, we decided on this one knowing it was an early ice-out option.
Late last night, two of us decided we would try today with warmer temperatures and low winds forecast. We arrived at the launch for 7:30 and were greeted with glass-like conditions as the sun began to peak over the trees.
Our first location was along a break coming up from the main basin of the lake in 58'. After a few marks came through, one finally rose straight up for my high hook, a small glow-white soft plastic minnow. Based on the depth and the weight I felt, I assumed it was a whitefish but after getting a closer look in the net, I realized it was a very large cisco!
The wind began to pick up and we decided to make the move and try a smaller bay to the east. We set up in 55' by the bottom portion of a dropoff. Within the next 2.5 hours the activity was consistent, we landed 6 more cisco and lost several others. They came in waves in groups of 2-5, near bottom and suspended.
Doubleheader:
In total we caught 7 cisco with the largest weighing 2lbs. 4.4oz.
