Thanks for the report Informative Angling.
Congrats on the nice catch and for releasing the 14.5 incher for the gene pool. Smaller perch make the best eating in my opinion. Very enjoyable day on the water.
Thank you! If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all the classes I’ve taken in evolution and population dynamics, it’s the importance of maintaining good genes within the gene pool. Not every perch can get to those extremities in size so I always make sure to release fish over 14 inches. I agree the smaller perch make the best eating, just more work when fileting!
WOW. That is a busy day of fishing. I do the same thing with crappie. Much better to stay as far back from the school as possible and draw the fish out from the rest, if possible. I don't use any technology (sonar) If the birds are not there to spot the fish for me, it takes a while to find them sometimes.
Its crazy, at one point i was following a school of probably around 15 monster perch. That school had me moving in circles constantly keeping their distance between me and them. Thats when i stopped moving and so did they, i pitched my jig from 50ft away and got hit as soon as i hit bottom, all the fish in that school were 12+ inches. Seems the small ones dont mind the boats as much as the real jumbos. Finding those smaller isolated schools really pays off, but again i dont know how someone without livescope could possibly be able to track these fish and stay on them.
You are 100% right without technology good luck finding the fish sometimes. Most people use some sort of electronics, old tech or all this new advanced stuff. I just like the old fashioned way of just going fishing. LOL. Some of us old guys may be outdated and out of style with all this new state of the art gear. But some how we continue to keep catching lots, and lots, and lots, of fish. The overwhelming anticipation of the fish hitting my bait without being announced on a 15 inch screen is the rush. Sitting in the boat or on the dock or fishing from shore. Fishing from sunset to sunrise, nothing beats the adventure of the unknown. Even if someone gave me the most expensive fish finding... thingamajig...gizmo...whatchamacallit... I still would not use it. LOL.

Thanks a ton to everyone for responding to my concerns about missing the spring perch run and for the added information you have given. I've had to change my plans a bit as the weather for Thurdsay is not co-operating so will likely wait till the weekend or early next week. Looking forward to finally getting to Lake Simcoe and catching some jumbo perch.

You know, sometimes I do miss that feeling I used to get as a kid when I would fish with no electronics and get bit when I would least expect it. But for me, the goal is to completely breakdown the patterns and the why’s of fish(at least as much as possible). I want to learn as much as I can every chance I get and then be able to share that information with those either just getting into the sport or those who would like to learn a little more. This never ending challenge of trying to understand the fish is what has made me fall in love with the sport and the use of electronics helps me try and unravel those mysteries of fishing!

Well said. You are lucky that you are young. You have decades and decades to unravel the mysteries of fishing. And just when you think you have figured the fish out, Mother Nature will trick you again and again. LOL. Some of us old guys have been fishing with great success over a lifetime of angling. And then every once in a while, the fish frustrate us in a whole new way. You have a great attitude and you are well on your way. Next time you find a school of larger fish, (whatever species) turn off your electronics after you catch one or two. Then wait.................................................................for the THUMP! Don't ever grow up either, it's more fun to stay young.
