Got two five gallon pails full in under 2 hours.

A pail each for a buddy and I.
Sorry I can’t share where it was as it’s my buddies spot and I was invited.

What I can say is I have seen several reports of good catches of Smelt. They are running early this year so get out and get some.

My Uncle had a neat quick way to preparing smelts. On the outside of the smelt, he ran his thumb down the belly from head to tail, cleaned out whatever came out, and rinsed & dried them then deep fried them to crispy golden brown
Damn good... he could do a 5 gal pail of smelt in no time... lol

Saw some boiling on surface in the sandy shallows on my way out to fish as the eclipse was setting in, pretty cool.

The larger fish up there must be happy and full, with that much to eat. Enjoy your fish sticks.

Ate some last night and did something different.

I marinated them in red hot then flour/cornstarch and fried.

Turned out really good IMO. Nicely different.

I’ve got a recipe for cedar planked smelts I’ll post later.

It's been a long while for me but back in the day we used to use scissors for a quick cleaning. Then into a deep fryer c/w beer batter! could not get enough of them!

Wow, nice.
Am I ever glad the GPS coordinates are on the picture details. I’ll be there tonight. J/K. Seriously some guys have sent me pics before where this was indeed the case lol. I haven’t got a haul like that for 15 years. Good to see there’s still good days somewhere now…

???

I sure hope the GPS coordinates aren’t leading you anywhere as I took that pic in my kitchen sink.

If you show up there in the dark at least turn on the coffee pot.
