I showed at the farm on Friday to put cameras up, which I did. While talking with farmer I mentioned that the turkey numbers are down from 10 years ago. Farmer than says well we bought a new farm that has way more birds than what I used to see at old farm. So I ask if I can hunt there and he says yes so go check out quickly. I was back yesterday to get a spot to set up, while I was admiring my work I turn around and there are 2 Toms about 80yds away. they wonder off in other direction, probably saw me. Will be there on opener.

I have no proof but I don’t think wild Turkey numbers are way down.
I see more each year and I know these mild winters with little snow really help the young of the year survive.
Let’s hope the numbers aren’t down and it was just that area.
The area I hunt it seems every property around has them. I went for a drive and every open field around had at least one or more visible.

Well this is it, one more restless sleep before the big day. Forecast for my area -4C with light winds for when I plan on arriving. Gun was sighted in on Sunday, dug out my vest this morning, loaded with 7 win longbread 3" #6, 4 calls, a hen decoy, chair and of course tag ready to me notched. All in vehicle except for gun of course.

Good luck everyone.
I am ready but torn if my decoy set will be a Hen and a Tom or a Hen and a Jake.
Early season those Tom’s should be getting Randy to fight for the hens but also the cold could put them off a bit. So many factors. My head always spins before opener with decisions.

I was going to go with just 1 hen, but I dug out a jake a few hours ago. I don't use a Tom decoy anymore as I thought it was actually scaring smaller birds away. If I was going only for the boss I would bring out the big Tom decoy in the first couple weeks. I'm wondering about the cold as well, don't remember hunting turkeys wearing my winter deer cloths before.

Turkeys were in my spot today. 2 Toms and 7 hens were coming in. Then two deer ran out and started chasing each other right in the flock. That got the birds a bit off. They got slow but still worked my way. About 80 years out they froze and got quiet. They stayed that way for 15 minutes. Then a coyote stood up 20’ from my decoys. It was hidden in the brush line the whole time. After that the Turkeys drifted off slowly but they did come back 20 mins later. Of course the flock split and three hens came and had a conversation with my decoys. The two Tom’s walked the opposite way with 4 hens. It was at least cool hanging out with the hens.

Well it was cold and not a lot of gobbling where I was. I called in two from 300 yards away. When they arrived at the decoys found out they were Jake’s. Passed on them but they came back 30 minutes later and I decided to take one.
