-4oC at the access point this morning. Brought out the neoprene pants and an extra layer for the upper body. A 30 min. pedal and I was sweating in the pants but no way to take it off in a kayak. But once I got to my fishing spot, the cold in the light breeze cooled things down nicely. Much easier to to drift off a spot today but still finding the WF took some time. But the first two drops at my first spot and two decent lakers come up and were released by the side of the kayak (well hooked but on the side of the mouth so a twist of the pliers and they came off quickly) so I left to look elsewhere. Took another 45 min. to find some decent marks and stayed there the rest of my time. Caught 2 (a female and a male) and time was up and had to go home...just when the activity may have been picking up. The male looked to be spawned out (gonads were pretty thin) but the female was still full of eggs. So, I am taking that to mean the spawn is underway, some are done and I happened to catch a female that is still not finished. Again, the water temp did not feel that cold yet.

Ya cold, very cold. Good job. Told you the fishing was still good. LOL. Hopefully you can keep fishing a while longer. Good luck.

Nice. So whitefish fishing is still good, and those whitefish are still at where they were a month ago, and are still biting? Well, I may have to give it another try (or two) before I call it "end of kayak season".... :-)

Yes, so far it seems so. Some are still not spawned so they are likely hanging around the same spot. I hope for another trip before I also put the yak away for the rest of the year...it's getting a bit cold. Luckily, it was a calm day. It would have been nice to be able to have fished later into the day when it got warmer. In some ways, I would like to see when they stop biting or stop being in the same place to know when they have changed patterns.
Let me know if you do come up to try for some WF.

Thanks. And yes I will let you know before/if I head up to the late close to where you are, and try for whitefish again...

Me too. A couple of more trips and then I will be more than happy to put things away and catch up on some less urgent but necessary house chores and then start playing a bit of hockey and wait for the ice. You too.

I agree and I don't take the time I get to fish for granted anymore. It's taken lots of hard work and several years away from fishing but I am fishing again...and it's a very different kind of fishing where I can't fish all day each time I go but at least I can do some fishing (and even better, catching too) even if for a couple of hours each time.
