Hi All,

I moved near the west side of Sturgeon Lake and I would love to take my sons out ice fishing for the first time.

Would anyone mind sharing if there are any spots to park and walk out from? Looking to catch some perch or something like that.

Any info is much appreciated, thanks!

So you don't live near Chemong or Pigeon river anymore. Are you close to Lindsay, Cameron or fenolen Falls?

Yes I am close to Cameron now. Any spots near Cameron or Fenelon Falls would be perfect!

Welcome to the neigbourhood. The family house is in Cameron. Now you could not walk from the driveway at the house, but I could ask some my friends that live right on the water. They might let you park in their driveway for a small parking fee. There is also Ken Reid Conservation area, just off Hwy. 35. They are open in winter, but I have no details on what services are available there. I am not up there now, came back to my real home, so no information on the ice conditions as of today.

I personally would not advise anyone to access Sturgeon from the southern end of goose Bay in the winter. You would be taking a big risk if you went north from Ken Reid in the main boat channel as the current can be quite strong and ice is definitely not that safe (esp. through the big cattail cut before Snug Harbour). There is still bad ice if you try to cross from Ken Reid to the west shore as McLaren's Creek flows out of there. I trapped it for years and it was never good ice. It would also be a good 3-4km skidoo run to get to the areas in Sturgeon you'd want to fish. Launch at Long Beach or southview. Much safer and closer to the fishing areas.

If you do skidoo from Ken Reid and elect to follow the west side of the marsh up to Southview estates, keep your speed down and be very careful in the dark. That whole area is filthy with stumps sticking up through the ice. Stay clear of the front of any active beaver houses you see along the cattail edge or you will get to take a swim.

The home/cottage owners that live along the waterfront at Long Beach try to act like they have ownership of the shoreline. They do have deeded right to access but that's it. The Trent Severn (federal gov't) owns the land up to the high water mark. If you look at the tenure assessment maps and the assessment records, there are at least three 66ft public road allowances along Long Beach Road where the road runs tight to the lake. Just visit the COKL office on Colbourne Street where you pay your taxes if you want free access to the maps/records.

All good advice, no ice is safe ice. As I mentioned on another post, there is a very long pressure crack running near Long Beach road right across to Sturgeon point. Have fun with your family, make sure you have all the safety gear. I see people on the ice in the past with no gear and it makes me cringe. How anyone can risk their life for a fish is bizarre.
