Happy new year!
Went looking for ice today. Went to spot A and it was wide open at shore and the ice was grey and sloppy looking, couldn’t get on here. Hopped over to plan B around the corner, and found a very sketchy shoreline, the lake level went up 6 inches last couple days after the rain and melt. The ice sheet lifted and created a moat around shore that required some engineering to cross. Engineering meaning a couple well placed rocks. So out I went and spud my way out of the channel away from the current and managed to find a consistent 5” of black ice…. After walking a literal mile or more we setup around 10am and managed a bunch of dink perch in 50fow. After an hour of that we moved to deeper water to wait for the big ones to come around. After a couple missed hits and a snapped line on a larger fish (bad leader) I finally hooked up with my first trout of 2025. Around 24” length and well proportioned. Great way to start the season. Played with a couple more chasers but couldn’t get them to commit. Jiggin at 35-40ft over 60ft of water with a consistent pile of bait on bottom. No Whitefish today, will try again tomorrow.
Met another board member out there and his friend also managed a nice one, maybe he will post it here.

On the long walk back we must have just missed this moose who decided to cross the channel. Tracks weee very fresh and were not there on the way out. Also based on the rate of snow we were likely within minutes.

Nice laker on opening day.
That moose looks to be pushing its luck a little bit walking right beside that black area. I’ve seen several on spring canoe trips dead in the water after they bust through the ice and get stuck in place.
