Late yesterday afternoon I thought I’d try to call in a coyote. We could hear them calling and howling the night before. I strapped on the snowshoes and went about a kilometre behind the house and set up. After a the second series of calls a coyote came out to circle downwind through the open field. She didn’t make it. I shot her at 70 yards with a .222 rifle.

I just use a little handheld mouth caller. It’s great for dying rabbit calls but not possible to make howling or pup in distress calls

I tried calling coyotes again late yesterday afternoon. I was getting within 100 yards of my calling spot and I bumped into a coyote at 100 yards. I only had time for a free hand shot but missed slightly high. Lots of tracks in the field of pairs moving around. I’ll try again later this week if the wind calms down.

well got out today. pulling up to the bush there are 4 deer heading into bush. I walk to the back of bush to hunt field. I sit for an hour with no luck so pack up. Go to get call and there are 7 deer about 100yds down from me. Go figure I go coyote hunting and only see deer, go deer hunting and only see coyote. Well was a good work out anyway snow was only about 6" but was crusted over, but not quite firm enough to stand on.

Glad you got out to try your spot for a last time. That hurts to lose a good hunting spot especially if you hunted it for a long time. The snow here is firming up but we still have a couple feet in the fields. It’s snowshoes only around here but at least now you don’t sink up to your knees even with snowshoes on.
I went for a 2 km. snowshoe yesterday morning but didn’t see any coyotes.
