Well after 5 years of having a camp I could finally take my wife along this year for a winter edition at camp. For years a trip to camp together in the winter just wasn’t in the cards with a severely autistic daughter at home. With our daughter now in a group home we were able to finally make this trip happen!
Day 1 was just about getting there. 8 hour drive, park at our farm that we also own up there, unload snowmobiles, fill toboggans and snowmobile the half hour trip into camp. Once at camp, crank up the woodstove and fire up the generator. Of course the generator did not want to start, so into the cabin it went and sat nicely beside the woodstove to warm up for a few hours. After that it fired right up. Always an adventure in the winter!
Day 2. Headed out in the morning on the snowmobiles and headed up the logging road. A nice casual hour ride into the wilderness. Took a bit of time getting to the lake we wanted to fish. We had to cross 2 lakes to reach the lake I wanted to take my wife. (I told her before we left she didn’t know what she was getting herself into) We also had to check ice at every single lake and the marshes that we had to cross to make sure they were up to my standards for taking my wife across on a snowmobile. Settled in on the lake for the day. Fire on shore with absolutely zero wind! Day 1 my wife showed me how it was done landing a beautiful Brookie. Her very first one of her life. She has heard myself and my kids always talking about catching them, but up till this week end had never landed one herself. That day she finally joined the Brookie club.
Day 3 Decided to push the distance thing as my wife became familiar on a snowmobile again and travelled farther away from camp. Settled on a nice little lake that had been stocked. Another day with zero wind! I need to take my wife more often. It’s seems to always be gusting winds when I go with the guys and we’re seeking shelter behind an island or something. Day 3 we basically played with little Brookies that were just recently stocked. Fun to play with but nothing of real size.
Day 4 Packed up, cleaned up, and and 8 hour drive home, praying that the 3 teenagers left at home over the weekend didn’t destroy the house.
