Beer-battered burbot (say that five times fast):
Had 4 of these, probably could have had 4 more:
Looks great Mike. I had burbot as well last night! They are a lot of fun to catch as well. Great fight - i call them hook breakers. Congrats on a good trip!
Thanks Joe, I nearly lost the larger one right at the hole. The fish managed to wrap itself around the transducer and one of the points on my treble hook was buried in the cable. Ended up letting out a bunch of cable in order to pull the burbot out of the hole. They sure do fight hard!

Is this one of the main large lakes around Haliburton (not sure i'm even allowed to ask that). Never caught a Ling before and trying to figure out the best way to go about it

No it’s not one of the larger lakes. My advice would be to use the Fish ON-Line app. You can search by species, look for lakes with deep basins. I caught these burbot in 50’ but they will come even shallower than that. Dusk to a few hours past sundown they will be most active but you could even dedicate a whole night fishing for them. Tip with chunks of bait, scent is important. Here is a clip from an Ontario Out of Doors article I saved with some tips:

We went looking for them last night and it was a complete bust. Major storm went through where we were fishing, we’ll blame it on that…Can’t win ‘em all! It was still good to get out with my dad and a buddy.

Sorry to hear that, they must have been hunkered down and inactive with that system coming through. What depth were you fishing in?

The lake is very deep, we were in 40 fow but it goes deeper than 100 feet. it was tough going in the weather and we were on foot so we decided to stop and set up the hut. maybe if we got a little deeper we would have found them. I’ve caught them in way less water though.. but my experience with these fish is very limited and what I caught was a long time ago. We were marking stuff on bottom but it could have been anything. It’s always great to be out anyways, might try a different lake next time.
