It's not a wound from a Lamprey. It is a Lymphocyte. Lymphocystis, it is a raised growth on the skin. I have posted on this topic a few times, over the last few years. As well as similar infections and or parasites. If you want more details, just punch that into a keyboard. There are quite a few disgusting things that can infect the fish we catch and eat. I am just happy I have never caught a crappie ever with any parasite, or infection. And maybe only one walleye a year with a slight defect.

I magnified the photo, best I could. Was it a crater or was the wound more or less above the skin. And yes I have eaten walleye with that on it. I just cut it out, if it's small. Had to destroy a muskie once that was covered with red soar disease. There can be a few different diseases on fish as well as parasites from time to time. Never hurts to read everything I can get my hands on, that has to do with the fish I target. Phone calls to the MNR Biologist helps a lot as well.

If it looks like a blister rather than a gouge, it's a growth. Sometimes caused by an infection under the skin. Sometimes these are contagious to other fish. Most fish that endure these hazards in their life have no lasting affects. Most times the marks will disappear with little or no trace of the original infection. It's up to each angler whether they keep and eat the fish, or release it.

Yes, that sounds exactly correct. Thanks for the feedback. Much easier to answer a question when all the facts are out there. I never tell people to eat a fish that does not look right. My limit would be one to cut out. Two or three I would release the fish. A fish that had many of those growths, I personally would destroy it. Thanks for posting, that is an interesting, but disgusting topic.

thks fr the clarification crappeeeman, it had the right circle for a lamprey but the mark didn't look right. So it was just a quick guess.

Doesn’t look like a lamprey to me.
I wouldn’t eat it despite past assurances about cooking making rest of fish safe.
Even if Dr F_____ said it was safe and tasty I would pass.
