It's opened up on the main lake side again today.
Sucks I wanted to try a spot later this week. Depending on where you fish it could have ice or open water.

Thanks Fish Food. It is a tricky area when it comes to freeze over. I was thinking about the North end and I'm sure that's the end your referring to. (Willow Beach end) Oh well I guess it's Lake Erie this weekend. Be careful out there guys and good luck to all

Hi Folks:

This will be my first post for this season - as usual I focus on the channel area between the mainland and Snake Island.

I checked the boat ramp at East Point Marina on Sunday and the entire channel area was covered in ice but really poor quality ice. The ice consisted of refrozen ice chunks that were quite granular and frozen in manner that resulted in a very rough, irregular manner with no snow on top of the ice which would make walking difficult, pulling anything while walking extremely challenging, travelling by ATV really rough and probably not advisable on a ski doo.

I was able to easily break 12 diameter ice chunks apart with by running shoe and as a result I wasn't willing to head out on the ice to check on the ice thickness.

I also observed a small pressure crack running from Roches Point past the end of the dock at East Point Marina and beyond the Government Dock.

In addition, I heard a islander went through the ice on an ATV since the weekend although I don't know the exact location, apparently the individual got out and the ATV was recovered however I suspect the ice in the area was compromised and I was unable to determine if the area was marked to alert others of potential dangerous ice conditions.

Personally, I won't be heading out on the ice in this area until the ice tightens up a bit longer.

That's all for now, Nancy

Thanks for the report Nancy. Looks like the area should be avoided for a bit longer. with the temperature drop next week things will be much more promising for the 25th.

In regards to the person/ATV that went through the ice, could you provide any other details to the incident? Is this fact or hearsay? Where was the location, was this in the channel between the Island and the Mainland?
