Hi Folks:

Managed to find sometime to drive up to the lake this afternoon to check on the ice conditions and I discovered/observed the following around 4:00 pm.

- there were 6 pop up huts off each end of Snake Island - there were no signs of vehicles so
I suspect people were playing it safe and walked out
- at least 1 boat ramp at East Point Marina still has rough ice conditions the other appeared to be
in much better conditions
- there were both ATV and ski-doo tracks (not many) leading out of the boat ramp area and I
observed 3 trails heading in different directions out from the end of the dock - 1 going left
towards Roches Point, 1 going right and 1 heading towards the mid-point of Snake Island
- the lake was covered in approximately 3-4 inches of snow - in which case I would advise
anyone heading out to check the ice conditions regularly because its still early in the season
and I am not entirely certain its safe and personally I won't be heading out on the ice for at
least another week in which time the forecasted cold front heading to this area should
increase the ice thickness
- the fish hut operator who operates out of East Point marina has not put his huts out on the
the lake but I noticed he had put out 2 minnow boxes next to the marina dock
- I did not observe any markers indicating where an islander on an ATV apparently went
through the ice earlier this week but will report more info once I hear more - but it was on
the route used by islanders commuting to and from the island exiting the island from the
permanent dock on the SE side of the island

Once again, I personally won't be heading out on the ice for at least a week due to the fact I am not convinced the ice is safe and I would recommend anyone who decides to head out on the lake to check the conditions on a regular basis. Stay safe folks.

That's all for now, Nancy

Thank you Nancy. The next few days we are getting the Polar Vortex and nice and cold temperatures. By next weekend it should look better out there !

Hi Folks:

Just a quick update as follows:

- the islander I mentioned that went though the ice in my earlier post went through the ice near the permanent dock (known as the West Dock to islanders). At this point I don't know the exact location but it was close to the island and not in the middle of the channel Apparently he managed to pull himself out of the water and crawl towards shore. I have been assured the area he went through has refrozen and given the current Polar Vortex which brought extreme cold temperatures I suspect the area he went through is now safe to cross however if I hear anything more on this incident I will post an additional update.

That's all for now, Nancy
