Great job Ernie! I'm glad the fish were cooperating today. I'm all packed up for a day on the ice with the wife and kids tomorrow. Need to test some new patterns I've been working on.

Very disappointing day! My grandson and I were in one of Taj’s huts today, after a 2 3/4 drive. My grandson got one herring, and lost a smaller one right at the hole. I got one 9” perch and a dink. All on minnows, but those 4 were the only bites we had all day. No luck whatsoever on any lures - slabgrabber, spoon, rattle spoon, blade bait, body bait, hard bait, jig, or plastics - and we tried with them all day.

that's not very good at all.....I just put up a report for my outing on the 24th and even though it was a tad slower than the week before, we still managed around 100 or so, but lots of dinks
I'm wondering if your equipment is too heavy as the bites were very light for the most part...we use nothing but ultra light rods and some of those have spring bobbers on them

Ultra lite rods with either 4 or 6 Lb mono and 6 Lb fluoro leaders. I’ve got 8 rods in my rod bag and we used the smallest ultralight rods i had in the bag….and even then I was holding the line in my fingers a lot of the time anticipating light bites. Just a total off day. Taj’s son said on the way back out that no one had much luck at all, so it wasn’t just us.

Very nice! Been debating on whether to buy an electric knife. I am a bit of a dinosaur and don't use electronics of any kind when fishing and love my custom filet knife(s). Had them made by a 4th generation blacksmith in Alberta and when cleaning perch if i stay focused i can do 25 to 30 fish per hour and only need to touch up the knife with a fine hone every 100 fish or so.
Have to give cred to newfs as well as i was taught by a newf friend about 50 years ago how to efficiently and quickly filet any fish boneless and skinless.
I only use my electric knife for Perch....way easier I find....for Salmonoids, Pike, Bass, Whities and all others I use a mix of my three Solingen steel knives.....very hard German steel.....best steel in the world imho. Swedes 2nd in steel....china at the bottom of the pile, but sure would like a handmade by a smite using solingen steel.

hope you have better luck next time you go
Too bad you had a bad day out there....I actually just use Taj's minnows on a rig with 2-#12 hooks a foot apart and a #5 sinker b6 inches below the bottom hook. ultra lite rods....#4 Suffix ice line for a main line. #2 fluorocarbon leader material for the rig. Deadstick till you see the tip move.....usually the bite when light will not be felt. So keep a contrasting colour behind your rod tip so you can clearly see the bit.
Thank you everyone else for the kind comments.....Werner I am looking forward to your post........and in a couple of days on Wednesday I will be back with Taj and Taj Jr. to try and create another post.

Round 2 with Taj. We went with 4 of us and got to Casey's at about 630am, We drove down to the ramp and went onto the ice to park and Taj would pick sup there. Well we buried the truck in the snowdrifts.
Taj to the rescue. He said leave it there an I will get it out for you, give me the keys and load your gear and I will take you to your hut.
Taj thank you....you are always there for your customers......absolutely the best.
He took us out and we caught a lot of dinks but also some nice keepers. I will post those that we kept.
A first for me was catching a smelt on a hook.....when I was a kid we used to net them.....it surprised me and yes I kept that one lone smelt, just for the taste.
Taj Jr. Came and picked us apart at 230pm and he had gotten Darryl's truck out.....We threw him some bucks and he refused it until we made him take it. Again thank you so much Taj family for making a stellar day for us that without your assistance would have been a nightmare.
This pic was our slow start. Also I had rookie Hump with me so we did spend some training Time to.....Perch 101.
